THE MUSHROOMS!!!! THEY- THEY SPEAK TO HIM!! THE SECRETS OH THE SECRETS
Information
-> Psittacosaurus are small compared to other creatures in the reserve, but they are still about the size of a medium dog. Smap doesn't seem to understand this and may try to jump on people if they aren't mindful. It is important that staff correct undesirable behavior whenever possible by diverting his attention elsewhere and only interacting with him when he's calm and on the ground.
-> While friendly with humans, he easily becomes nervous or overwhelmed. He handles stress poorly, becoming mouthy or overly clingy, which may cause unintended injury. Staff should not leave him unattended for long periods or knowingly put him into situations that involve other creatures, loud noises, unpredictable movement, or lack potential hiding places.
-> Smap often bonds strongly with those he frequently interacts with, clinging to them by following them around. Though skittish & quick to hide away at any sudden moments, he does enjoy engaging with others by sharing his toys and food, and the occasional snuggle. Be aware he frequently attempts to preen humans, which may result in accidental bites or scratches.
History
- The earliest information about Smap dates back to when he was rescued off the street as a squeaker and taken in by a young couple. Affectionate but clingy, he was treated much like a dog. When an infant entered the home, however, his overbearing nature became too much, resulting in his surrender to Rosa.
- Despite attempted rehabilitation, his dependence on humans quickly proved him unfit for both the reserve and facility; unable to fend for himself and frightened by everything and everyone. After witnessing his inability to thrive, a shelter manager he had bonded with decided to take him home. Though doing much better in a place of his own, Smap reacts poorly to separation and frequently joins his handler at work as a result, staying close by as he nervously holds onto one of his many toys.
